Popeye Popeye is a 30’s Children’s TV cartoon, The character of Popeye was created by Elzie Segar in 1929. He originally appeared in The Victoria Advocate Newspaper as a character in a comic strip called 'Thimble Theatre' This was not Segar's first move into comic strips, as he had been drawing the Charlie Chaplin comic strip for the Chicago Herald for 2 years (until it went out of business). It hasn't been fully confirmed, but Popeye is probably based upon a person from Segar's hometown - Frank 'Rocky' Feigle.   Popeye became the most loved character in 'Thimble Theatre' and this was reflected in the large amount of Popeye merchandise that was available to buy. From this phenomenal success, a deal was struck with Segar in 1932 so that Max Fleisher's animation studio could create Popeye cartoons. Not only this, but the famous 'Popeye the Sailor Man' song was created by Sammy Lerner for the show. The cartoons were a great success and were followed by more from the studios. Other studios have made cartoons that starred Popeye and the gang (not all have been covered here), such as 'The All New Popeye Show' and 'Popeye and Son'. Popeye goes under different names throughout the world, such as:   Iron Man (Italy) Karl Alfred (Sweden) Skipper Skraek or 'Terror of the Sea (Denmark) Because of Popeye's love of spinach, he was credited with a 33% increase in sales of the green stuff, between 1931 and 1936. Also in 1937, two statues were erected in Crystal City, Texas. One was for the Creator (Elzie Segar), the other one was for Popeye.     Story  Popeye and Bluto have been fighting each other for the affections of Olive Oyl for years, which is surprising, as she isn't no oil painting. Popeye just wants a quiet, peaceful life, with his girlfriend Olive, but this isn't to be. Bluto, a so called friend of Popeye, always wants to muscle in on the act and take away his girlfriend at any cost.   Popeye tries to keep his temper and will even try to make friends with Bluto given the opportunity. Bluto knows this and offers the hand of friendship to him, but it's only a ploy to grab hold of Popeye and bash him. Eventually Popeye can't take it anymore and Bluto is in for it. Popeye gulps down some spinach for for some extra strength and pounds Bluto and ends up walking off with Olive (for the time being). Popeye Characters    Popeye Popeye is the pipe smoking boyfriend of Olive Oyl. He's a sailor in the US Navy and has an anchor tattoo on each of his arms. He's a bit of a snorer. He is always trying to keep hold of his gal, against the bully Bluto. Every once in a while Bluto gets the upper hand against him, so Popeye needs to get a boost of energy to get himself out of the situation. So what does he do? Eat energy pills or drinks? No, instead he pops open a can of Spinach (remember kids, its good for you) and eats it and he now has super strength! It must be special spinach, as anyone can get strength from it, even a mouse!   He has 4 nephews - Peepeye, Poopeye, Pipeye and Pupeye. Their resemblance to Popeye is astounding. He even took on the greatest sailor of all time, Sinbad (who looks suspiciously like Bluto), when he kidnapped Olive. So after eating some spinach, he put him back in his place.     Olive Oyl She is a bit of a plain Jane. She is so thin and lanky, if she turned sideways, you would mark her absent. So as you can guess, she's not the strongest person. She must be one of the most fickle women in history. One moment she's going out with Popeye, the next moment she's dumped him and is going out with Bluto.   This seems to happen nearly every 5 minutes. Look!, just stick with Popeye!!     Bluto Bluto is also in the US Navy, but he's a bit of a bully and wants Olive to be his gal. But there is one person that's stopping him, Olive's boyfriend, Popeye. Maybe it's me, but I don't think Bluto would be interested in Olive if Popeye wasn't around. I think he likes the chase and likes to get one over on Popeye. Bluto will use every dirty trick in the book to stop Popeye seeing Olive. He even poured quick drying cement into Popeye's bath, when he was getting ready to marry Olive. Once Popeye got out of that one, he nailed his shoes to the floor, put glue on his chair and sabotaged his electric shaver. What a cad!   You do feel a bit sorry for Bluto when Popeye eats his spinach and then pounds him, but he nearly always deserves it. He especially deserves it when he man handles Olive and tries to force himself on her (shame on you!).     Wimpy Wimpy just loves eating Hamburgers, he can't get enough of them.
