Raggy Dolls
Raggy Dolls is an 80’s Children’s TV cartoon. Roy Evans
was commissioned by Yorkshire TV to produce an animated
title sequence and end credits for a programme to be based
on an original idea by Melvyn Jacobson and illustrations by
Steve Smallman. At the time the programme was to be
little more than a story teller with the camera tracking and
panning over illustrations.
However they liked the titles and decided on 13 episodes of
limited animation, one every 6 weeks. They were very
cheap to make. Roy did the script editing, layouts,
backgrounds and animation. Neil Innes (of Puddle Lane
fame) did the narration and was also responsible for the
music.
Reaction to the
show was great
and a second series was commissioned and this time
more money was given to do it. Roy was now spending
7 days a week working on it.
Yorkshire TV were so happy with the programme, that
they wanted more episodes - faster. They decided that
they needed a team of animators for the job, instead of
a one man band, and commissioned further series' of
the Raggy Dolls with Orchid Films instead.
Story
Any doll that was made incorrectly at Grimes' Soft Toys was taken to the reject bin. Inside of this
bin lived 7 dolls, who loved adventures.
Each episode began with -
‘Its not much of a life when you're just a pretty face
Just to be whoever you are is no disgrace
Don't be scared if you don't fit in
Look who's in the reject bin!
It's the Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Dolls like you and me
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Made imperfectly
So if you got a bump on your nose or lumps on your
toes
Do not despair
Be like the Raggy Dolls, and say I just don't care
Cause Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Are happy just to be
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Dolls like you and me!’
The Raggy Dolls Characters
Sad Sack
He was a sample doll, but because he had so much stuffing, he was too
expensive to make. He's also a little bit slow.
Back-to-Front
He is a Handy-Man doll. The trouble was they put his head on the wrong
way when he was made.
Hi-Fi
He is a talking doll that was dropped while he was being tested and
developed a stammer.
Princess
She should have come out of the factory looking like a Princess with a
tiara, but instead came out with a dress made of rags, no tiara and
cropped hair. Cinderella eat your heart out. She also tries to speak posh,
but doesn't carry it off very well.
Dotty
She had paint splashed on her and it wouldn't come off. This is the only
thing wrong with Dotty. She's also quite bossy, so don't get on the wrong
side of her.
Lucy
Poor Lucy was sewn together with faulty thread. When she gets excited
then she can literally fall apart!
Claude
There is nothing wrong with Claude. He was left behind when the
machine made one too many dolls for a special export order to France.
Mr Grimes
Runs Grimes Soft Toy Company.
